Bell group welcomes two new members

October 2024

The new academic year brings two new members to our group. Freya is the newest PhD student in the group and will be using Autoschlenk to build f-block metal clusters.

Emanuele joins us with established expertise in digital chemistry after a placement project at the Materials Innovation Factory in the University of Liverpool.

Autoschlenk wins the RSC Digital Discovery Prize at the TAROS conference

Marina presented her work at the Towards Autonomous Robotic Systems (TAROS) conference in London this week.

Winning the RSC Digital Discovery prize for her presentation entitled: How Automation solves a Chemical Cold Case.

Bell Group welcomes two summer students

July 2024

Two students are joining our group for the summer to work on ligand development for lanthanide complexes.

Oliver is Postgraduate Masters student at UofG and is finishing his degree with a research project in our lab.

Cristina is an international visiting student from Texas as part of the Arcadia exchange program.

Their presence is brightening up this rainy summer in the Bell lab!

Marina Wins Top Prize for her poster at USIC

June 2024

The Bell Group was out in force at the reinstituted Universities of Scotland Inorganic Chemistry conference at the University of Edinburgh.

Our PhD Student Marina presented a poster on her Copper bis-silylamide chemistry and took home the top poster prize for her contribution.

Well done Marina!!

Dr Bell gives keynote lecture at the 2024 Stone Symposium in Bristol

Nicola was invited to be part of this symposium honouring Prof. Phil Power. She was able to share some exciting unpublished work from our group.

Bell group wins funds from RSE to setup international collaboration

Febuary 2024

We have secured funds from the Royal Society of Edinburgh to setup a collaboration with Virginia Tech’s Dr Michael Schulz. We will work together on polymer sequestration of harmful metals.

In the first part of the project we will host an american student in the Bell group to train them in handling of actinides.

Royal Society funds the Bell Group

January 2024

We’re delighted to have been awarded funds from the Royal Society to develop our technology for high throughput organometallic chemistry.

This award has funded the purchase of a ReactIR system for our lab to perform real time monitoring of our reactions.

Eve joins the group

4th December 2023

This week we welcomed Eve to the group. She will be undertaking a short research project developing novel Zwitterionic ligands under the tutelage of Dr Drummond-Turnbull.

Dr Bell attends the Automated Synthesis Forum

This week Dr Bell jetted off to icy Basel, Switzerland to attend the 2023 Automated synthesis Forum on the Novartis campus there. Our work on automating air sensitive chemistry was presented as well as a host of automation solutions from across industry and academia.

Richard presents ‘Extremely Basic Chemistry’

Group Postdoc Richard presents his work today on Extremely basic chemistry at the Functional Molecules and Assemblies symposia. Richard also introduced the work of the Bell Group generally to the department.

We’re Moving!!!

21st November 2023

Big changes here in Glasgow as we finally move into our permanent lab space. This new facility allows us plenty of room to grow and a fabrication workspace to develop our automation tools. Props to the team for a smooth transition.

Bell Group welcomes it’s first PhD Student

With the new semester now in full swing the Bell group is growing. We’re delighted to welcome Marina as our first PhD student who will be investigating high throughput organometallic chemistry. Marina comes to us from the University of Strathclyde and enjoys learning German in her spare time.

EPSRC Vacation Intern - Cameron - presents his results

13th September 2023

Our superstar summer intern Cameron will today present the results of his 10 week project in the Bell Group. Cameron, a computer science undergraduate at Glasgow, has been working on developing the functionality and user interface for our automated systems.

Bell Group visits SUERC to share materials and knowledge

Today we visited SUERC to find out about their history of radioactive research and obtain some Thorium for our future investigations.

Installation of our new Glovebox

Our Digital Schlenk Line goes public

Welcoming Dr Richard Drummond Turnbull

Our first postdoc Richard joins the group this month from Manchester. Richard is an expert in highly air sensitive uranium chemistry and will be turning his hand to automation here at Glasgow.

At the 2023 RSC Dalton Joint Interest Group Meeting held at the University of Warwick Dr Bell presented our work on the AutoSchlenk for the first time.

Dr Bell was recently invited to present to the EPSRC Council meeting on the Future of Chemistry.

Nicola discussed how we can accelerate the digital revolution in chemistry and how we can improve support for new parents in academia.
